Steven was introduced to social dancing over 30 years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it from the start. In 1999, he was invited to a 2-week dance camp where he discovered contact improvisation (CI) and has been immersing himself in this movement practice through jams, workshops and festivals annually, around the globe, for over 20 years.
In 2012, Steven founded Contact Improv Chiang Mai, a community space for personal exploration and deepening through the form of contact improvisation in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he organizes a weekly jam, an occasional workshop and spontaneous public improvisational expressions. He has taught CI at this jam for many years and at several festivals in Thailand and Nepal, and enjoys working with beginners to CI.
For Steven, CI is about relationship; to self, others and the world around us. It is an opportunity to listen deeply, move authentically, respond sensitively and be present with what is happening now. When there are no jams, he has been seen moving with trees, statues, furniture and water.
